Malcolm Majer

I studied furniture design at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 2005. I started a metal fabrication business in 2007 and sidelined the furniture practice or tried to fold it in to the day job with increasingly unsatisfactory results. In late 2017 I started making furniture in an open-ended way, using scrap material and architectural fabrication techniques, playing with formal arrangements and color, and focusing on seating. The group of work from 2018-2023 shown on this site represents a variety of seating pieces, each one exploring a unique formal and/or color question. The work is personal and serves as a way to process the day job of interactions with clients and designers, giving me a chance to play with non-function, anti-function and irreverent design within a functional framework. My studio is in Baltimore, MD, a place I love to live and work. I have been able to show my work in design fairs and galleries in New York, NY, Baltimore, MD, Provincetown, MA; Chicago, IL; Paris and Brussels. I have work available at Otras Formas in NYC and I welcome studio visits in Baltimore, MD.
